How To Get To Koh Yao Yai from Phuket + First Views of The Island – Thailand

Time to explore a new Thai island! There we go Koh Yao Yai!
Expect all you need to know about the island soon, starting today let’s see how to get there:

How To Get To Koh Yao Yai from Phuket + First Views of The Island - Thailand

How To Get From Phuket To Koh Yao Yai

There’s no airport in Koh Yao Yai, after getting nearby the island the only way to access it is by boat.
The closest point is Phuket (Click here to see how to get to Phuket), we’ll be explaining how to transfer from Phuket to Koh Yao Yai step-by-step.
As you saw on the video there are 2 piers which can be used for this route. One is called Bang Rong Pier located on the northeast of the island and the other one is called Chianwanich located at the southeast of the island.
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand so save about 1 hour to go from your hotel to either of these piers, the best is asking your hotel how long it will take because if you are staying out of the main beaches time may differ. There’s no public transportation to access the piers, scheduling a taxi will be needed.
Bang Rong Pier pier counts with speed boat and private longtail boats only. Chianwanich Pier has speed boats and car ferry for those who can’t/don’t want to ride a speed boat or wishes to bring a car/motorbike together. Speed boat rides take about 40 min, the car ferry and longtail boat take 1 hour.
Here the boat timetable:

Boats from Phuket To Koh Yao Yai

 Speed BoatCar FerryLongtail Boat
Chianwanich Pier
(arrive at Loh Jark Pier)
- 10:00, 17:00 (there are more boats in between this times without accurate schedule)
- 200 baht per person
- 08:30, 10:00, 14:00
(no service on Fridays)
- 140 baht per person, 400 baht with car
X
Bang Rong Pier
(arrive at Klong Hia Pier)
- 07:40, 08:40, 09:15, 09:40, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:15, 14:30, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 17:30
- 300 baht per person
X- private, schedule up to you during day time
- 2000 baht per boat

Another thing to be considered is if your hotel in Koh Yao Yai offers the transfer, contact them beforehand and remember to specify the departure pier.
Is also important to check the location of your hotel because the final stops of the boats depend from where they departed, for example, from Bang Rong Pier pier they stop in Klong Hia Pier(unless you hire a private long tail that will leave you at your hotel) and Chianwanich pier will leave you at Loh Jark Pier in Koh Yao Yai.
As these boats can’t be booked with travel agents or hotels in town, information is scarce and often inaccurate. The only way to buy the tickets is in person at the piers which are located quite far away from the main hotel areas. Yet, there’s always available space in the boats and/or extra boats departing, don’t worry about staying without tickets (unless you’re bringing a car, then calling the pier in advance is advisable, help from a Thai speaker will be needed, phone: (087) 896 0756 or (087) 2720132.

We were welcomed by a new shade of blue to our eyes on the island sky, the masterpiece was completed with a touch of swinging coconut trees.
Sand down, sun up, what a wonderful world!💙

If you have limited time in town, this can be skipped, it’s more of a relaxation moment after a tour day for those who have the luxury of time.

Staying With The Akha Hill Tribe – Chiang Rai, Thailand

Located 24 km from Chiang Rai city center, 1500 m above sea level, the Akha village can be found.
The scenic ride couldn’t be more pleasing passing by rice fields, hot springs, mountain, rivers, temples, villages, and lush greens.
When arriving in the village the theme is kept, it’s placed in a valley surrounded by tea plantations.

The Akha are an indigenous hill tribe originally from China, they migrated to Southeast Asia in the early 20th century.
They are one of the largest hill tribe groups in Thailand.
We had the pleasure to spend some time with them and their beautiful surroundings and here goes some tips for you to do it too.

The Hotel

Luckily, for those who wish to stay, the Akha run a budget hotel inside their village.
Prices go from 200 to 1200 baht depending on the room.
The bamboo bungalow fits perfectly with the environment and creates a magical light effect when the sunrise comes.
Everything is very simple, more suitable for those who don’t mind budget stays.
Here their website: http://www.akhahill.com/

How To Get there

Sited 13 km away from the city center, some kind of transportation will be needed to access the village.
To better explore Chiang Rai, we recommend renting a motorcycle( 200 baht per day) or a car during your stay(if you are an experienced driver).
If that is not desired or possible, free transport (on limited hours) is offered for those staying at their hotel.
Another option is grabbing a taxi or booking guided treks on the surroundings.

The Unique Blue Temple – Wat Rong Seur Ten – Chiang Rai, Thailand

Everyone that comes to Chiang Rai will visit the White Temple but not everyone knows about the stunning Blue one.
This beauty, rich in details and colors, is on our must-see list while in Chiang Rai.

The local villagers wanted to have a temple nearby and decided to build it where a 100 years old temple ruin was located.
Rong Seur Ten means “House Of The Dancing Tiger”, named after the actual tigers that used to jump the Mae Kok river in this area in the past.
It was established in 2005 and completed in 2016, still, in 2018 when we visited we could see new features getting done.
The artist is a student of Chalermchai Kositpipat, the White Temple creator, thus a modern take can be seen in between the traditional Buddhist style.

The inside walls depict the life of Buddha, with the blue color representing the Dharma.
Together with the main blue, the color pallet of the paintings is breathtaking and use unique shades compared to any other temples in Thailand.
The white Buddha statue is a beautiful contrast with the colors and at the same time reflects the blue walls, a true show of colors.

How To Get There

Located 3 km away from the city center, some kind of transportation will be needed to access the temple.
To better explore Chiang Rai, we recommend renting a motorcycle or car during your stay(if you are an experienced driver).
If that is not desired or possible, grab a taxi or tuk-tuk which will cost around 50-100 baht. Make sure to think about the ride back in case you see there’s no waiting transportation around the temple.
We rented a motorcycle for 200 baht per day.

From Chiang Mai To ???? – Get To Know Our Next Destination! – Thailand

From the latest capital of the Lanna Kingdom to the former one, Chiang Mai(founded in 1296) to Chiang Rai(founded in 1262), Kingdom that became part of present-day Thailand in 1920.
Our time in Chiang Mai has come to an end and the excitement of discovering the largest northernmost city in Thailand is up!
We recommend you to do it too, and for that, first you have to get there:

How To Get From Chiang Mai To Chiang Rai

🚌 By Bus

⚫️Step 1: From the Old City To Arcade Bus Station
Buses to Chiang Rai depart from Arcade Bus Station which is located about 4,5 km far from the old city.
There are a few different options on how to get to the station:
-By Minibus
They depart from several points in the city, but locals don’t know anything about it, you have to be able to find it yourself.
The reason behind it is that most of the people use other transportations, still, this is the cheapest way to get to the station for only 15 baht per person (waiting time between buses is 20 min).
There’s a website with the route but no English translation, the minibus going towards Arcade stops at the old city nearby Wat Prasat, Wat Tung Yu, and The Phae Gate(have a look at other stops in the picture below).
Street signs are placed in the sidewalk on the points where the B1 bus stops(have a look at the picture to have it as reference). They work from 6 am to 6 pm.

-By Tuk-Tuk
The famous transportation will charge about 150 baht for a ride to the bus station.

Get To Know The Northern Thai Hill Tribes - Chiang Mai, Thailand
-By Songthaews/Red Trucks
A larger version of a tuk-tuk, able to carry more passengers, will charge 30 baht per person and will depart when full.
Ask your hotel where is the nearest stop, if you only catch one passing by, the price is not the same.
-By Taxi
Usually, the taxis will have a fixed fare of 150 baht, bargaining may be needed.

Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Station – สถานีขนส่งเชียงใหม่ อาเขต
Address: 165, Soi 5, Kaeonawarat Road, Tambon Wat Ket, Chiang Mai
GPS: 18.800818,99.017251 (copy and paste in map’s search bar for exact location)
Address in Thai: 165 หมู่ 5 ถนนแก้วนวรัฐ อำเภอเมืองเชียงใหม่

⚫️Step 2: Ticket
Surprisingly, there is only one company running buses to Chiang Rai, it’s called “Greenbus”.
There are also private minibusses but they don’t depart from the station, you can purchase this on the travel agencies around town.
Greenbus has coaches departing at least every hour from 6:45 am to 6 pm, have a look at their website for the latest timetable: https://www.greenbusthailand.com/website/en/services/bus/time-table .
The ride takes from 3,5 to 4 hours and costs 129, 166, 258 baht depending on the class.
Most travel agencies in the old city don’t book the tickets(double check with your hotel, maybe you are lucky), it’s needed to go to Arcade to but it yourself. That being said, Arcade is far from the city center, most of the time there will be bus tickets available for the same day(a few hours gap is likely) but in case you have a tight schedule you should buy it in advance. If you arrived in Chiang Mai by bus and know when you want to leave, buy it at the station before coming to the city.

From Chiang Mai To Chiang Rai - Thailand

⚫️Step 3: Arriving In Chiang Rai
There are 2 stations in town, the old Bus Terminal 1 (located in the city center) and the new one Bus Terminal 2 (7 km from the city center).
The right one to get off the bus will depend on where you’re staying but is very likely that you are somewhere near the old station.
Buses will stop first at the new one, make sure to stay on the bus if you are heading to the city center, the next stop will be the old station.
The Bus Terminal 1 is located 5 min from the clock tower, most hotels will be within walking distance.

Arriving at Chiang Rai Bus Termianl 1

The station is just next to the Night Bazaar
🚃 By Train

There are no trains to Chiang Rai, the nearest train stop is in Chiang Mai itself.

✈️ By Flight

The 2 cities are not that far from each other, by bus it takes about 4 hours, for that reason flight departing from Chiang Mai will have a stopover in Bkk before heading to Chiang Rai, what makes flying the same length or even longer than a bus ride.
It will be up to your preferences whether you think it is worth it or not.

Chiang Mai International Airport – ท่าอากาศยานเชียงใหม่

🚕 By Taxi/ Car/ Motorbike

*It is possible to rent a car and drive to Chiang Rai by yourself as it’s not a complicated route. This is only recommended for those who have experience driving in Southeast Asia.
*Some people will do the run by motorbike, which we do not recommend due to the heavy traffic of trucks and buses on the highway.
*Some taxis can do the way, not every taxi in the street will accept going that far. If this is something you are thinking about, ask your hotel for a reliable contact and plan in advance. The trip will take around 3 hours and cost from 2000 to 3500 baht one way.
