Things I Find Exotic In China

Here we come with a list of things we find alluring in China.
They are distributed around the country and can be seen on a daily bases, yet, they never cease to enchant.

Gates
Páifāng

The grandiose gateways are distributed all around, using traditional Chinese architecture, adding beauty to wherever they stand.

Guardian Lions
Shíshī

Originated from Buddhism, the stone lions are also popular in other parts of Asia.
They are believed to have protective benefits and are usually represented in pairs.

Hand Fans
Zhé Shàn

The charming ancient object even though used worldwide, is strongly associated with Chinese culture.
In the past artists used to hand-paint the fans making them true pieces of art.
There’s also a variation called Chinese dancing fans, which is used in traditional performances.

Chinese Pagodas

These beautiful towers are one of those things that come to mind immediately when thinking about China.
In the past they were constructed to store relics, nowadays there are diverse uses for them, including housing temples as one of the most popular.

Things I Find Exotic In China

Asian Conical Hats
Dǒulì

Created to protect from the sun and rain, this hats came to be associated with Chinese culture.
They are often spotted in the cities and display the mix of the old and the modern coming together.

Things I Find Exotic In China

Parks and Gardens

It didn’t take long for us to notice that the Chinese gardens and parks are a spectacle of beauty.
Not only big and famous ones but every little garden you spot is a work of art, they definitely mastered it.

Things I Find Exotic In China

Singing and Dancing Groups

My first time in China was in 2008 and I come back every year since then, I visited and lived in many cities and never went without seeing the dancing and singing groups.
They usually use traditional music, which helps to give a truly Chinese experience for anyone passing by.

Taichi
Tàijíquán

T’ai Chi Ch’uan (Tàijíquán) means “the ultimate fist”. It’s an internal Chinese martial art, which means that apart from the physical aspects, it comprises Qi (life force), spiritual, and mental characteristics.
Click here to see our experience in a Taichi class in Shanghai.

Things I Find Exotic In China

Roofs

Part of Chinese traditional architecture, the intricate roofs caught my attention for the first time on my trip to the Forbidden City in Beijing.
The amount of detail and colors leave you gaped. Since then, I always pay attention to the alluring roofs in every place we visit in China and I am yet to be disappointed.

Things I Find Exotic In China

Lanterns

Symbol of traditional Chinese culture, the gorgeous lanterns are still found decorating the cities.
They give a special air to any ambient and for tourists like us, it brings the real feeling of being in China.

Picturesque Zhujiajiao is and a great way to dive into the local culture.
Established over 1,700 years ago, with findings dating over 5000 years, the ancient town holds enchanting sites and experiences.

Beautiful souvenirs can be found in the streets, local art and tradition are on display everywhere you look.

It is a great way to spend half or a full day with friends, chill out at a tea house, and enjoy the view.

How To Get There:

We took the Huzhu (Shanghai-Zhujiajiao) special line at Yan’an Road(also departs from Laochengdu Road), this specific bus runs between 7am to 5:45pm inbound and 6am to 5:15pm outbound.
There are also buses departing from Shanghai Stadium, Qinpu Bus Station and Puan Road Bus Station.

By Subway + Bus
Alternatively, take the subway to line 2 East Xujing Road(last stop) and from there a bus to Zhujiajiao Bus Station.

By Taxi
The ride will cost around 200rmb.

TOP 10 VEGAN Restaurants in Shanghai – China

There’s a feeling, a peace of mind, that only my fellow vegans can understand.
When ordering food without any worries that it might not be vegan or have been cross-contaminated.
When you can pick anything from the whole menu, when only actual real food is being cooked on the place.
In celebration of this feeling we came up with this list, our favorite vegan eats in town!

TOP 10 VEGAN RESTAURANTS IN SHANGHAI:

If Vegan

Address in Chinese: 上海陕西北路408号

Huge plus here, apart from everything being plant-based, is that the staff are also vegan!😃

Great to spend some time, read a book, and scape a bit from the city buzz.

TOP 10 VEGAN Restaurants in Shanghai - China

Some searching is needed to find the restaurant inside the big mall.
Once you find it, the kind staff and tasty food will make the search worth it.
Chinese food fits perfectly with plant-based, the dishes are always delectable.

Vegetarian Lifestyle – 枣子树
Vegetarian Restaurant
Also known as Jujube Tree
Address: 258 Fengxian Road, Jingan District, Shanghai
Address in Chinese: 上海静安区奉贤路258号
Subway station: Nanjing West Road – line 2/12/13 , exit 1
Website: http://www.jujubetree.com
Open from 11:00am to 9:30pm.

Even though most of the menu is vegan, this still is a vegetarian restaurant.
The desserts are the biggest flaw, almost all including dairy products.
When focusing on the bright side, there’s plenty of delicious vegan options, giving a taste of Chinese cuisine for fellow foreigners or bringing comfort food for locals.

Having nice dine out options can play a role in how much it is (or it isn’t) cozy to live in a city.
Eating is part of everyday life and Shanghai has got a nice bunch of yumminess to make it easier, healthier, and better.
