The Best Kept Secret of Malaysia + How To Get There – Tenggol Island

When searching beach destinations in Malaysia, Tenggol won’t be an easy find, it seems like it is a secret, and only those who dig really dip will be able to find the hidden gem.
Gorgeous Tenggol is a small island, 3km long and 2km wide, with only 2 hotels that share the same bay.

Trekking is not possible due to poisonous snakes that inhabit the island, what I personally find gives it mysterious.
On the other hand, diving, snorkeling, and chilling on the beach are pretty possible and that’s what we came for.🏝

On our first snorkeling stop, we jumped into the water to find perfect visibility.
The real, faultless example of crystal clear water, while turtles and fishes came to say hi.
To place yourself in this shoes(or fins!), first, you’ll need to arrive at the stunning island:

How To Get There

From Kuala Lumpur:

Departing from Kuala Lumpur you need to get to Kuala Terengganu, where the nearest airport to Tenggol is located.
There’s actually a private airport that is even nearer Tenggol called Kerteh Airport, but prices are 5-6 times higher and flights are available only a few days a month, making it hard to fit in a schedule.
By bus from Kuala Lumpur, the nearest destination is Kuala Dungun, and the trip takes around 5-6 hours.
Flights are really cheap, the best transportation choice will depend on your trip format.
If you are island hopping the flight makes much more sense, if your only destination is Tenggol the bus can be an option.

*If coming by bus skip this step
After arriving in Kuala Terengganu airport, look for taxi stalls, there you can book your trip to Dungun.
It will cost rm110 and take around 1,5 hour, usually, there’s no waiting line.

Those visiting first Kapas Island will be coming from Marang, taxi and buses are available from the city.
The trip takes around 1 hour and will cost rm40-60 by taxi, it can be arranged with your hotel or by GrabTaxi app.
By bus, it costs between rm10-15, check latest bus timetable calling the number below.

From Kuala Dungun to Tenggol Island:

If you came by taxi ask to be dropped at Dungun Pier.
If by bus, you’ll be dropped at the Dungun Bus Station, where you can either walk or grab a taxi to Dungun pier. The walk will take 25min, and taxi 4min costing around rm10.

Arriving at the pier, every hotel has its own jetty, ask around using your hotel name to be pointed in the right direction.
The boat transfers are included in the hotel booking, no extra fees.
If you have no hotel and is planning only to stay a few hours at the island and come back in the same day, call in advance to hotels, travel agencies, or local dive shops to have boat service arranged. There are no public boats.

The Best Kept Secret of Malaysia + How To Get There - Tenggol Island

In case you need to wait or/and is hungry, there’s a small hotel restaurant where that can be done.
After that, a 50min boat ride will take you to a paradisiacal island, welcome to Tenggol!🏝

Where To Stay

There are only 2 hotels on the island, they are all at the sandy Teluk Ayer Tawar bay, package deals are the best way to book them.
Usually, we are not the “group” or “package” kind of tourists, but for this specific location, the cheapest and most efficient way is opting for the package.
Talking about costs, having only 3 hotels, the island is definitely not a backpack budget friendly one.
There’s an investment to be made if choosing Tenggol, but it is certainly worth it.

The available hotels are all beachfront, serve buffet style meals, and have diving and/or snorkeling trips included on the deals.
Prices depend on the number of nights, room arrangement, and activities of choice.
You can check their websites below for latest rates.

The hotel we stayed did a decent job of accommodating our special necessities as vegans, the cook was creative and prepared flavorful dishes for every meal.
We booked a 4 people shared room and ended up staying by ourselves, which was a nice surprise.
The staff was kind, helpful, and friendly. We had a great stay and would come back to Tenggol Island Beach Resort.

Here the hotel’s websites:

Tenggol Coral Beach Resort: https://tenggol.com.my/

Having the opportunity to be in such place is a blessing in our lives!
We are very grateful to have this chance and happy to be able to share it with you.

Allured by Tenggol? Stay tuned for more!🏖
