From Chiang Mai To ???? – Get To Know Our Next Destination! – Thailand

From the latest capital of the Lanna Kingdom to the former one, Chiang Mai(founded in 1296) to Chiang Rai(founded in 1262), Kingdom that became part of present-day Thailand in 1920.
Our time in Chiang Mai has come to an end and the excitement of discovering the largest northernmost city in Thailand is up!
We recommend you to do it too, and for that, first you have to get there:

How To Get From Chiang Mai To Chiang Rai

🚌 By Bus

⚫️Step 1: From the Old City To Arcade Bus Station
Buses to Chiang Rai depart from Arcade Bus Station which is located about 4,5 km far from the old city.
There are a few different options on how to get to the station:
-By Minibus
They depart from several points in the city, but locals don’t know anything about it, you have to be able to find it yourself.
The reason behind it is that most of the people use other transportations, still, this is the cheapest way to get to the station for only 15 baht per person (waiting time between buses is 20 min).
There’s a website with the route but no English translation, the minibus going towards Arcade stops at the old city nearby Wat Prasat, Wat Tung Yu, and The Phae Gate(have a look at other stops in the picture below).
Street signs are placed in the sidewalk on the points where the B1 bus stops(have a look at the picture to have it as reference). They work from 6 am to 6 pm.

-By Tuk-Tuk
The famous transportation will charge about 150 baht for a ride to the bus station.

Get To Know The Northern Thai Hill Tribes - Chiang Mai, Thailand
-By Songthaews/Red Trucks
A larger version of a tuk-tuk, able to carry more passengers, will charge 30 baht per person and will depart when full.
Ask your hotel where is the nearest stop, if you only catch one passing by, the price is not the same.
-By Taxi
Usually, the taxis will have a fixed fare of 150 baht, bargaining may be needed.

Address in Thai: 165 หมู่ 5 ถนนแก้วนวรัฐ อำเภอเมืองเชียงใหม่

⚫️Step 2: Ticket
Surprisingly, there is only one company running buses to Chiang Rai, it’s called “Greenbus”.
There are also private minibusses but they don’t depart from the station, you can purchase this on the travel agencies around town.
Greenbus has coaches departing at least every hour from 6:45 am to 6 pm, have a look at their website for the latest timetable: https://www.greenbusthailand.com/website/en/services/bus/time-table .
The ride takes from 3,5 to 4 hours and costs 129, 166, 258 baht depending on the class.
Most travel agencies in the old city don’t book the tickets(double check with your hotel, maybe you are lucky), it’s needed to go to Arcade to but it yourself. That being said, Arcade is far from the city center, most of the time there will be bus tickets available for the same day(a few hours gap is likely) but in case you have a tight schedule you should buy it in advance. If you arrived in Chiang Mai by bus and know when you want to leave, buy it at the station before coming to the city.

From Chiang Mai To Chiang Rai - Thailand

⚫️Step 3: Arriving In Chiang Rai
There are 2 stations in town, the old Bus Terminal 1 (located in the city center) and the new one Bus Terminal 2 (7 km from the city center).
The right one to get off the bus will depend on where you’re staying but is very likely that you are somewhere near the old station.
Buses will stop first at the new one, make sure to stay on the bus if you are heading to the city center, the next stop will be the old station.
The Bus Terminal 1 is located 5 min from the clock tower, most hotels will be within walking distance.

The station is just next to the Night Bazaar
🚃 By Train

There are no trains to Chiang Rai, the nearest train stop is in Chiang Mai itself.

✈️ By Flight

The 2 cities are not that far from each other, by bus it takes about 4 hours, for that reason flight departing from Chiang Mai will have a stopover in Bkk before heading to Chiang Rai, what makes flying the same length or even longer than a bus ride.
It will be up to your preferences whether you think it is worth it or not.

🚕 By Taxi/ Car/ Motorbike

*It is possible to rent a car and drive to Chiang Rai by yourself as it’s not a complicated route. This is only recommended for those who have experience driving in Southeast Asia.
*Some people will do the run by motorbike, which we do not recommend due to the heavy traffic of trucks and buses on the highway.
*Some taxis can do the way, not every taxi in the street will accept going that far. If this is something you are thinking about, ask your hotel for a reliable contact and plan in advance. The trip will take around 3 hours and cost from 2000 to 3500 baht one way.

Get To Know The Northern Thai Hill Tribes – Chiang Mai, Thailand

When I was a child I used to watch documentaries about people all over the world with my father, I never thought it would be possible to meet any of those people, it never happened to anyone I knew. We were just watching, getting amazed, and getting on with our lives.
Not even for a second, I could imagine being where I am today, experiencing first-hand cultures that were just extraordinary dreams.
I am grateful to say this is not the first time I am inside one of the documentaries we watched, and I pray it won’t be the last.

From Sukhothai To Chiang Mai + First Impressions – Thailand

How awesome is it to be able to explore Northern Thailand this way!
This is such an exciting trip, we are pouring happiness every step of the way.
On today’s video, we arrive at legendary Chiang Mai, have a look at how you can do it too below.👇

How To Get From Sukhothai To Chiang Mai

By Bus

Sukhothai’s bus terminal is located in the new city, not extremely far from the central area, but far enough to grab a tuk-tuk.
The 2nd class buses to Chiang Mai depart frequently during the day, we paid 207 baht each and the trip took 5 hours.
First class(266 baht) and VIP(375 baht) buses depart with less frequency, make sure to book in advance if you choose this options.
There are 2 bus stations in Chiang Mai, the one running long-distance trips is called Arcade, located about 4,5 km from the old city.

How To Get From Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Station To The Old City:
☛By Minibus
There’s a map of the minibus route at the bus stop, located across the parking lot on terminal 2 (GPS:18.800200,99.017483). The old city is small, there’s probably a walkable stop to your hotel.
Tickets cost 15 baht per person and the waiting time between buses is 20 min.
☛By Tuk-Tuk
The famous transportation will charge about 150 baht for a ride to the old city.
☛Songthaews
A larger version of a tuk-tuk, able to carry more passengers, will charge 30 baht per person and will depart when full.
☛By Taxi
Usually, the taxis will have a fixed fare of 150 baht.

By Train

There are no trains that departure from Sukhothai.
The most convenient train station nearby is placed in Phitsanulok, a neighbor city one hour away by car/van.
At first, it wouldn’t make much sense to choose the train knowing that the bus departs straight from Sukhothai, but Phitsanulok is also a historical city, for those who are interested in visiting it’s a great option.
You can spend the day at Phitsanulok and then head to Chiang Mai at night if staying in the city is not in your schedule.
If Phitsanulok is not in your plans, but still you prefer traveling by train, take a bus or minibus to the train station. It will take 1 hour cost from 30-70 baht depending on the coach.
Trains from Phitsanulok to Chiang Mai cost in between 65-305 and take 6-7 hours depending on the class and train type(express, ordinary, etc).
In this website you can check timetables, fares, and seating options with pictures of all trains in Thailand: http://www.railway.co.th/home

By Flight

The small airport is a beautiful one, reminds me of Koh Samui’s airport.
Only one company caters to the city.
The prices are higher than the general rate in the country but doable for those who don’t want to lose time or don’t like to travel by land.
